The birdwatching destination in Tarapoto offers a specialized experience in the Andean Amazon, where the convergence of ecosystems supports a high level of ornithological diversity. In areas such as the Área de Conservación Regional Cordillera Escalera, visitors can observe toucans, hummingbirds, raptors, and endemic species, allowing for technical observation, identification, and photography tours along altitudinal gradients that optimize species detection.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Área de Conservación Regional Cordillera Escalera

This sector of the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area, located along the Tarapoto–Yurimaguas highway, encompasses premontane and montane humid forest, with elevations ranging from 400 to 1,200 meters above sea level. It is a key area for birdwatching due to its high diversity and the presence of endemic and threatened species.

Among the main recorded species are:

  • Koepcke’s Hermit (Phaethornis koepckeae)

  • White-chested Puffleg (Schistes albogularis)

  • Plumbeous Euphonia (Euphonia plumbea)

  • Turquoise Tanager (Tangara varia)

  • Golden-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra erythrocephala)

  • Golden-collared Toucanet (Selenidera reinwardtii)

The area offers vehicle access, observation points along the road, and secondary trails used by specialized birdwatchers. It is highly recommended for both photographic and scientific records.

DAY 2: Dry Forest and Riverbanks of the Río Huallaga

This area includes tropical dry forest habitats and riparian vegetation along the Huallaga River, at low elevations (150–350 meters above sea level). It is a transitional ecosystem of high ornithological value due to the presence of species associated with open areas, riverbanks, and forest fragments.

Main species recorded in the area:

  • Olivaceous Elaenia (Elaenia mesoleuca)

  • Rufous Casiornis (Casiornis rufus)

  • Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin)

  • Spangled Cotinga (Cotinga cayana)

  • Northern Slaty-Antshrike (Thamnophilus tenuepunctatus)

Access is available by land and river, allowing observation at strategic points along the river and in areas with secondary vegetation. It is recommended for birdwatchers interested in species associated with semi-open and riparian environments.

DAY 3: Pongo de Caynarachi – Lowland Amazon and Cordillera Escalera

A transition zone between the lowland Amazon (200–400 m a.s.l.) and the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Escalera, characterized by the convergence of primary forests, riverbanks, and mountainous terrain. This habitat diversity supports a high concentration of species, including birds that are difficult to observe in other sectors.

Notable records:

  • White-throated Toucan (Ramphastos tucanus)

  • Gray-cowled Wood-Rail (Aramides cajaneus)

  • Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus)

  • Blue-backed Manakin (Chiroxiphia pareola)

  • Buff-breasted Wren (Cantorchilus leucotis)

Pongo de Caynarachi offers both river and land access, allowing birdwatching in creek areas, river edges, and sloped forest habitats. It is recommended for observers seeking to combine lowland and montane forest species in a single excursion.

DAY 4: Dry Forest and Área de Conservación Regional Cordillera Escalera (Alto Shilcayo Sector)

This sector combines areas of dry forest and premontane humid forest within the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area, at elevations ranging from 350 to 800 meters above sea level. Its proximity to the Shilcayo stream and the diversity of microhabitats support a high variety of species, including both resident and migratory birds.

Main species recorded in the area:

  • Black-billed Thrush (Turdus ignobilis)

  • Ashy-headed Greenlet (Hylophilus semicinereus)

  • Brazilian Teal (Amazonetta brasiliensis)

  • Lined Seedeater (Sporophila lineola)

  • Lesson’s Seedeater (Sporophila bouvronides)

The excursion follows well-defined trails, including stretches along the stream and natural viewpoints. It is an ideal site to complement previously observed species lists and to obtain records in drier and more open habitats.

DAY 5: Pongo de Caynarachi – Lowland Amazon

Located within the Huallaga basin, this area corresponds to the lowland Amazon (200–350 m a.s.l.), featuring tropical humid forest, secondary vegetation, and river edges. It is an ideal setting for observing typical lowland and riparian bird species, with excellent visibility in open areas.

Notable ornithological records:

  • White-chinned Jacamar (Galbula albirostris)

  • Scarlet-crowned Barbet (Capito aurovirens)

  • White-crowned Manakin (Pipra pipra)

  • Rufous-tailed Jacamar (Galbula ruficauda)

  • Blue Dacnis (Dacnis lineata)

Access is available either by river or via trails near the Yurimaguas–Tarapoto highway, allowing observation during key activity periods for many species. It is ideal for photographers and birdwatchers interested in understory and forest-edge birds.
